다. 지각에서의 존재 비는 약 1.8 ppm (0.00018%)로, 대략 51번째로 풍부한 원소로 여겨지며, 생명체가 살고 있는 생물 생활권에서는 12번째로 풍부한 원소로 추정된다 주요 비소 광물은 계관석(鷄冠石, realgar: As4S4), 웅황(雄黃. orpiment: As2S3: 석웅황이라고도 함), 황비철광(黃砒鐵鑛, arsenopyrite 또는 mispickel: FeSAs) 등이다. 원소 상태의 비소는 1250년에 마그누스에 의해 처음 분리된 것으로 여겨진다. 회색, 노란색, 검정색의 3가지 비소 동소체가 있는데, 회색 비소(α-비소)가 가장 흔하고 주로 사용된다 비소는 고대부터 동서양 모두에 알려져 있었으며, 강한 독성 때문에 사람들을 독살하는데 사용되기도 한 반면, 암 등을 치료하는 의약품이나 안료로도 사용되었다. 주기율표에서 질소(N), 인(P), 안티모니(Sb), 비스무트(Bi)와 함께 15족(5A족)에 속하는 질소 족 원소로, 금속과 비금속의 중간 성질을 띠는 준금속이다.
